Chore Charts That Work: Ideas by Age and How to Make Them Stick

A chore chart works when the jobs fit the child, the expectations are clear and progress is visible. Here are ideas by age. Every child is different, so treat these as a starting point.

Ideas by age

AgeChore ideas
3–5Put toys in a bin, put clothes in the hamper, help feed a pet, match socks, wipe up small spills
6–8Make the bed, set and clear the table, water plants, sort laundry by color, pack their own school bag
9–11Load or unload the dishwasher, take out the trash and recycling, vacuum a room, fold and put away laundry, help with simple meal prep
12+Clean a bathroom, wash dishes by hand, cook a simple meal, mow the lawn with supervision, do their own laundry start to finish

Making it stick

Our Kids Learning & Chores Pack includes a weekly chore chart with star boxes and a reward line, plus a reading log, a 50-book challenge and times-tables practice sheets with answer keys.

Always match chores to your child's abilities, and supervise anything involving heat, sharp tools, chemicals or machinery.
